Open Sew: Alterations and Fitting Workshop
In this 2-hour machine sewing class taught by Amanda Campbell, you will learn how to alter or mend garments in your closet that you need help with. We’ll figure out what needs to be changed, how to approach it, and how to execute the alteration correctly.
Have a garment sitting in your closet that needs to be hemmed, taken in, repaired, or adjusted, but not quite sure how to fix it? Bring 2-4 of your own garments and work on the projects that are most useful to you. Amanda will be available throughout the session to help you assess fit and construction issues, determine the best alteration method, demonstrate techniques, and guide you through completing the work yourself. Bring the garment you've been avoiding. Let's finally fix it.
Suitable projects:
Hemming pants, skirts, dresses, or sleeves
Taking garments in or letting them out
Waist and waistband adjustments
Fixing a gaping waist
Adjusting shoulders or straps
Basic garment repairs and mending
Other straightforward alterations you're unsure how to tackle
This class is great for anyone who has a few items in their closet that need alterations, but they aren't sure how to fix them or feel overwhelmed by how to mend them and is aged 12+. If you are looking for a class for someone younger than 12, please see our 1:1 lessons.
Students must have experience threading a sewing machine, loading & winding a bobbin and sewing a straight stitch to take this class.
Please bring 2-4 garments you'd like to alter or mend, matching thread and any necessary notions, extra fabric if your alteration requires additional material, as well as the following items with you to class if you have them. If not, they will be provided for you: Tailors chalk or disappearing ink fabric markers, scrap fabric for repairs, seam ripper, sewing gauge.
We have portable sewing machines that you can borrow if you don’t currently have one. Please note that you’d like to use a studio machine when prompted for the make/model of your machine during sign-up. If you have your own machine, please bring that to class along with your power cord/pedal, manual (if you have it) and an empty bobbin or two.
The Top Stitch Studio is located at 203 Hull St, Suite C in Manchester. There is typically street parking within a block or two and a small shared parking lot located at the very corner of Hull St. and Brander St. with a few spaces. Please do not park in the larger lot behind the building as it requires a permit and you could be towed.
This class needs at least 2 people to run so sign up with a friend or share on social media to help spread the word. If the class doesn’t reach its minimum capacity, we will notify you 2 days in advance and issue a refund for your payment. Invite your friends through our Facebook event!
