Sew a Shorts and Top Set
In this multi-week, 2-hour, machine sewing class, you will be guided through sewing the Varigata Shorts Set by Mood Fabrics, a matching set of elastic waist shorts and a collared button-up top. Making a cute sleep set is a great way to jump into making garments from patterns! We will cover sizing, assembling the pattern, fabric selection, and more.

The printed pattern will be provided. Students need to plan to purchase their own fabric and materials (interfacing and elastic) after the first class, during which sizing, measurements, yardage and fabric specifics will be covered. See below for complete list of materials and tools to bring to class.
Materials:
1.5 yards fusible interfacing

Mend Friend Meetup
This is a pay-what-you-can unplugged community sewing circle. Bring a project (a sock to darn, a hem to stitch, a hoop to embroider, or some yarn to knit or crochet) and join us at the ICA. This is a self-guided gathering—think of it like coworking with fiber friends.
This is not a class, but a welcoming space to work on your own project, meet fellow makers, and maybe even swap a tip or two. Anything goes, as long as it's unplugged (no machines at this time).
The Facebook event can be found here. The more the mendier—tell a buddy and bring them along!
Please register here. We have pay-what-you-can options below and will also have the option of cash & Venmo tipping on site. All donations go directly toward our free programming to keep it going.
If you have questions about our repair services and sewing classes, we’ll be happy to answer them during the meetup.
This event is held at the Institute for Contemporary Art cafe on the first floor from 12-2pm at 601 W Broad St, on the corner of Broad and Belvidere. There is a parking lot adjacent to the museum with paid parking and there will be food and drinks available for purchase during the event.

Bring in a single item with minor issues for an on-the-spot mini-mend, drop off your whole mending pile for pick-up at a later date, or just come say hi and check out the studio. We love to meet new people and chat sewing and sustainability!
Can’t make the event but have your mending pile ready to go? You can always schedule a drop-off with us at our Church Hill studio location or Eco Inspired, our Southside drop-off and pick-up location.

In this 2-hour, hand sewing class, you will learn to darn your favorite socks. Don’t have any socks with holes to repair? We have extras to share!
This class is good for anyone who wants to learn these skills aged 12+. If you are looking for a class for someone younger than 12, please see our 1:1 lessons.
All materials are included.
Please note: if you think any of your wool socks have damage from moths, rather than wear, you will need to place them in a ziplock bag and put them in your freezer for a minimum of 72 hours before bringing them in. This usually happens to sweaters, scarves and other items that are made of natural fibers like wool and alpaca. You will not often see actual moths — just the holes they have left. Please keep your items in the ziplocks until class. This stops them from snacking and protects everyone else’s garments — it is extremely important to keep the studio moth-free.

Monthly walk-in day: Open Studio
Open Studio is the day of the month where we open our doors and accept appointment-free walk-ins.
Check out our Instagram highlight for how to prep your pile and invite your friends through the Facebook event.
This is a FREE event, with no registration required.

In addition to the sewing techniques, we will discuss how to care for clothing that has been visibly mended.

Week 2: Variations of rice stitch and satin stitch
Week 3: Attach patches using the stitches above
Week 4: Flat weave over a hole with extra time to work on personal repairs
We will provide scrap fabric that you can practice on and turn into patches the first 3 weeks. You can also apply these techniques directly to any well-loved clothing that you bring along. On week 4, you will learn to how to apply patches with the various stitches you’ve learned.
Note: An article of clothing is NOT required to participate as we will have plenty of practice materials for you to create patches with, that you can apply to clothes in the future.

This is a great class for anyone who has already taken Continued Machine Sewing or has a good level of confidence behind the sewing machine and is ready to expand their skillset. Students must have experience completing simple, self-guided sewing projects at home like tote bags or seam repairs and feel comfortable and confident enough to take on an advanced challenge, knowing there will be lots of help and personalized attention.
4 buttons
1 yard of elastic
1 spool of thread
4-6 yards of basic cotton fabric, can be found locally for as little as $3 per yard. A large thrifted tablecloth can work too
Masking tape
Tools:
Fabric scissors
Paper scissors
Pins
Iron to use at home
Sewing machine to use at home
Monday, August 3rd / 6-8pm (no sewing machine needed)
Monday, August 10th / 6-8pm
Monday, August 17th / 6-8pm
Monday, August 24th / 6-8pm
There will be homework between classes! Preparing the paper pattern, cutting out fabric, and sewing the simplest straight seams of the garments will be part of homework.
*Note: we are unable to provide any partial refunds if one or more of the classes are missed.

This is a great class for new sewists who can use their machine but have yet to make a project.
