This style of quilting is the ultimate stash-buster. Kawandi is a style of quilting that originated from the Siddi community - descendants of African slaves - to the western region of India. This hand-stitched quilt is made using scraps of fabric and, unlike Western Quilting, is assembled from the outside in using a basic running stitch. This is an improvisational, get-it-done, use-what-you-have style of quilting.

In three 2-hour hand quilting classes, you will learn how to create a Kawandi quilt and experiment in improvisational design using fabric scraps to make a placemat-sized quilt. This class is great for anyone who wants to dive in to the unique process of Kawandi-style hand quilting. No quilting or sewing experience is necessary. In this 2-hour, hand sewing class, you will learn 6 foundational embroidery stitches as part of an embroidery project that can be completed on a stand-alone piece of fabric or on an item of clothing. In this multi-week, 2-hour, machine sewing class, you will learn how to use the Colorblock Top pattern by Matchy Matchy to make a top in your size. Sewing a cute top is a great way to jump into making garments from patterns! We will cover sizing, assembling the pattern, fabric selection, and more.

This is a great class for anyone who knows how to Follow a Sewing Pattern, but is not quite ready to Sew a Shorts and Top Set. Students should have a good level of confidence behind the sewing machine and be ready to expand their skillset. Students must have experience completing simple projects at home and feel comfortable and confident enough to take on an intermediate challenge, knowing there will be lots of help and personalized attention.

The printed pattern will be provided. Students need to plan to purchase their own fabric and materials after the first class, during which sizing, measurements, yardage and fabric specifics will be covered.

• 1.5 yards fusible interfacing

• 1 spool of thread

• 1.5-3 yards of basic cotton fabric, can be found locally for as little as $3 per yard.  A large thrifted tablecloth can work too

This style of quilting is the ultimate stash-buster. Kawandi is a style of quilting that originated from the Siddi community - descendants of African slaves - to the western region of India. This hand-stitched quilt is made using scraps of fabric and, unlike Western Quilting, is assembled from the outside in using a basic running stitch. This is an improvisational, get-it-done, use-what-you-have style of quilting.

In three 2-hour hand quilting classes, you will learn how to create a Kawandi quilt and experiment in improvisational design using fabric scraps to make a placemat-sized quilt. In this 2-hour machine sewing class, students will learn basic quilting skills while creating a patch pocket that can be added to clothing. Students have the option to bring any 100% cotton secondhand clothes and/or scrap fabric to use, otherwise, all materials are provided. If you have an item of clothing you want to affix the completed project to, please bring it with you to class. This is not required to participate.

In this 2-hour class, you will learn how to clean and lubricate your sewing machine. We'll cover the upper and lower parts of the machine. This is home maintenance, not complicated servicing. The aim is to prolong the life of your machine, maintain the quality of your stitches and lengthen the periods in between professional services. Please bring the sewing machine you want to learn to maintain. Students should be able to thread their machine and sew test swatches.
