Sock Darning
In this 2-hour, hand sewing class, you will learn to darn your favorite socks. Don’t have any socks with holes to repair? We have extras to share!
This class is good for anyone who wants to learn these skills aged 12+. If you are looking for a class for someone younger than 12, please see our 1:1 lessons.
All materials are included.
Please note: if you think any of your wool socks have damage from moths, rather than wear, you will need to place them in a ziplock bag and put them in your freezer for a minimum of 72 hours before bringing them in. This usually happens to sweaters, scarves and other items that are made of natural fibers like wool and alpaca. You will not often see actual moths — just the holes they have left. Please keep your items in the ziplocks until class. This stops them from snacking and protects everyone else’s garments — it is extremely important to keep the studio moth-free.

Kawandi Hand Quilting (3-week class)
This class is taught by guest teacher, Karen Middleton and meets thrice:
Wednesday, March 4th from 6-8pm
Wednesday, March 11th from 6-8pm
Wednesday, March 18th from 6-8pm
*Please note: we are unable to provide any partial refunds if one or more of the classes are missed.
This style of quilting is the ultimate stash-buster. Kawandi is a style of quilting that originated from the Siddi community - descendants of African slaves - to the western region of India. This hand-stitched quilt is made using scraps of fabric and, unlike Western Quilting, is assembled from the outside in using a basic running stitch. This is an improvisational, get-it-done, use-what-you-have style of quilting.
In three 2-hour hand quilting classes, you will learn how to create a Kawandi quilt and experiment in improvisational design using fabric scraps to make a placemat-sized quilt. This class is great for anyone who wants to dive in to the unique process of Kawandi-style hand quilting. No quilting or sewing experience is necessary. This class is beginner-friendly and welcomes all skill levels. All materials provided, although, since this is a hand quilting and scrap-focused class, students can choose to bring their own thread, needles, and scraps to work with.

This style of quilting is the ultimate stash-buster. Kawandi is a style of quilting that originated from the Siddi community - descendants of African slaves - to the western region of India.

Mend Friend Meetup
This is a pay-what-you-can unplugged community sewing circle. Bring a project (a sock to darn, a hem to stitch, a hoop to embroider, or some yarn to knit or crochet) and join us at the ICA. This is a self-guided gathering—think of it like coworking with fiber friends.
This is not a class, but a welcoming space to work on your own project, meet fellow makers, and maybe even swap a tip or two. Anything goes, as long as it's unplugged (no machines at this time).
The Facebook event can be found here. The more the mendier—tell a buddy and bring them along!
Please register here. We have pay-what-you-can options below and will also have the option of cash & Venmo tipping on site. All donations go directly toward our free programming to keep it going.
If you have questions about our repair services and sewing classes, we’ll be happy to answer them during the meetup.
This event is held at the Institute for Contemporary Art cafe on the first floor from 12-2pm at 601 W Broad St, on the corner of Broad and Belvidere. There is a parking lot adjacent to the museum with paid parking and there will be food and drinks available for purchase during the event.

Sweater Repair (4-week class)
$260.00
2 hours per week, hands-on small group class. All levels/no experience necessary. All materials included.
In this 4-week class, you will learn basic techniques to repair your favorite knits. We will discuss sweater care and best practices along the way. These techniques can all be done as visible mends or blended in.
Week 1: Basic darning
Week 2: Fine knits
Week 3: Chunky knits
Week 4: Swiss darning and duplicate stitch
We will be providing material to practice on, however, if you have any sweaters you'd like to repair, please bring those along.
Please note: If you think any of your items have damage from moths (i.e. moth holes), you will need to place them in a ziplock bag and put them in your freezer for a minimum of 72 hours before class. This usually happens to sweaters, scarves and other items that are made of natural fibers like wool and alpaca- you will not often see actual moths- just the holes they have left. Please keep your items in the ziplocks until class. This stops them from snacking and protects everyone else’s garments, it is extremely important to keep the studio moth-free.
4 week class starting on Tuesdays in February (3rd, 10th, 17th, & 24rd) from 6-8 pm.
